Some Schedule Changes

Starting Monday November 9th

We're always looking at how to improve the training here and make it better for everyone from Beginner to Black Belt. Since we moved in January, we've set up a new programme of classes and developed a brand new curriculum. We've also had to take some time to get used to what works for people's times, parking, and travel to the new gym.

We've identified 2 big issues from feedback in the last few months-

  1. Earlier classes are better for most people

  2. People are confused by the names of the sessions!

We want to accomodate everyone as best we can, so we're using both sides of the mat to move some sessions earlier. And we've simplified the names of sessions and added a helpful guide at the bottom if this post to help you know where you fit in.

We want to make sure everyone is getting good training, and that the level of Jiu Jitsu in the gym continues to go in the right direction, so from Monday November 9th, we'll have the following tweaks to our schedule, and to our class names!

Fundamentals will to be the primary class for White belts to attend, or for others to brush up on their core techniques. In this you'll learn the very fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. These classes will reduce to 1 hour in length to make them more accessible to people making the transition from Beginner level up. Here you'll get great instruction on the techniques, movements, and concepts you need to learn, as well as plenty of live training. Mixed Level is the most frequent class on the schedule. Mixed means what it means! White belt to Black Belt, Beginner to Advanced, these sessions will be flexible sessions for everyone to train in and learn. This will teach our Mixed Curriculum, with live practice, positional focus, and sparring. Excellent training for everyone. This curriculum will be broadly similar to the current Core one. Intermediate/Advanced Level is a new session, with new, earlier time slots. We got feedback that this was a big issue for more experienced people with early starts and young families, so we've moved them back 30 minutes in the evenings. We'll start with 2 Gi sessions with NoGi following once our current Beginner Course has completed. Inter/Adv will be for 2 stripe White Belt and up, and teach a new Curriculum that focuses on individual development.

Team Session- Bring Both

Every Saturday we'll be encouraging everyone to pack both Gi and NoGi gear in their bags. We aim to have plenty of bodies on the mat to train in whatever you're focusing on, and to create a really large team session each week that means you can stick to Gi, stick to NoGi, or do some rounds in both each week.

This will be for the whole club, so it's about grabbing your mates and dragging them down to train each and every Saturday. It's not an Open mat- the coaches will be there to point you in the right direction and there will be a warm up/timed structure. But the training will be about what you're working on- whether it's getting back to basics, advanced technique, or maybe just getting loads of rounds in with the guys.

The Bring Both rule is because sometimes you might not have the numbers in one set of gear or another, so it's best to be flexible on these days. But the goal is to have so many people down that you'll get great training in whatever you need.

Explainer- Which class should I train in?

If you're a current or new member, this will explain the classes we recommend for you to get the best training for your level-

Total Beginner from 0-12 months

Fundamental- Mixed- Team Session

Intermediate 12 months (2 stripes on white belt) to 2 years

Fundamental- Mixed- Intermediate/Advanced- Team Session

Advanced 2 years plus

Mixed- Intermediate/Advanced- Team Session

Competitor

4-6 times per week. Mixed- Intermediate/Advanced and Never Miss a Saturday

Remember...

You go through different stages in your Jiu Jitsu career and in your life. Coming back after a break, or when your work or home life is very busy might mean that you have to take a step back into less challenging sessions for a while. The above is just a guide. Ultimately, your training is your own, and doing what works for you is important.
